Grand finale of birthday celebration for my better half at her (and mine too) fave meat restaurant, Shelter in the Woods.

Decor is in keeping with its name, rustic, cosy and comfortable featuring various wood elements and accompanying bric a brac.

There’s a nice al fresco area that offers street views of the upscale neighbourhood clustering Greenwood Avenue.

Helmed by Japanese Chef Masashi Horiuchi, with decades-long experience in Michelin restaurants across Europe under his belt who commands an excellent repertoire of rotisserie and charcuterie offerings that feature very delicate balance of taste, robust yet not overwhelming.

We started off with the Burrata & Tomatoes that came with a tumbler of a tomato essence oil – refreshing and light,  enough to whet our appetite.

From the soup section, the CHICKEN BROTH with house-made foie gras, mushroom & chicken ravioli was a very delicate connoction;  accompanied by a touch of theatre with the broth poured tableside from a kettle.

The PORK RILLETTE with house-made pickles and toasted poolish baguette was very rustic and gamey, getting us ready for the main action.

Here, the meat are the stars: the ROASTED RIBEYE STEAK of black angus grain-fed ribeye, French fries & mesclun with Shelter mushroom sauce was perfectly seared to a medium rare, doused gently with the aromatic garlic oil.

The ROTISSERIE RACK OF LAMB of Australian four-rib lamb rack, herb crusted, roasted baby potatoes, mesclun & gravy are superbly executed – best lamb in town, just crusty on the outside but pink and juicy within – OMG!

Of the evening specials, the PORK BELLY PASTA was sinfully delish; the drippings from grilled pork transformed into a wickedly addictive sauce that clung perfectly to the al dente linguine; the whole dish almost oriental in taste.

Overall, a very satisfying dinner, paired nicely with the Château Chantalouette Pomerol 2012 that was well-rounded, fruity with light tannins.

Prices at Shelter in the Woods are very reasonable, and coupled with the good service, it remains one of my go-to place when the carnivore in me calls.
