I was invited to this business lunch at The Disgruntled Chef at The Club along Ang Siang Road that’s lined with hip eateries.
Helmed by highly-acclaimed Chef Daniel Sia, whom I encountered when he was the Chef de Cuisine at Justin Quek’s Le Platane in Shanghai while I was stationed there briefly. This outlet at The Club (there’s another outlet at Dempsey) is particularly charming; being located at the achingly hip The Club, nestled along old shophouses in the gentrified Ang Siang Hill populated with media and advertising party animals.
The decor is very Gentlemen club-like: white linen, dark leather sofas, elegant with lime-green hues dominating.
The food is quite creative and generally good. My cured CURED HAMACHI with Pickled Beets, Orange, Kale Chips was good; just a wee bit fishy.
For my main course, the GRILLED STRIPLING with Pomme Puree, Charred Cabbage, Shallots in Red Wine was nicely done medium rare. My lunch companion remarked that her GRILLED LAMB T-BONE with Roasted Pumpkin, Pomegranate, Lamb Jus was excellent.
The PRIX FIXE WEEKDAY LUNCH is good value at two-course / three-course (with one pudding) $38++ / $45++ respectively. If your are a tourist, this historical and quaint part of our country is worth exploring, and The Disgruntled Chef offers a welcome respite from the punishing Singapore humid weather overly a leisurely white-linen lunch that wouldn’t break your bank.
