Yogyakarta Adventures – Historic Phoenix Hotel Rises

Yogyakarta has been on my to-visit list for a long while, particular to tour the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the world. The international airport at Yogyakarta is small and makes for a quick getaway with the hotel pickup efficiently waiting for us.

The choice of abode for our long weekend in Yogyakarta is the  historic Phoenix Hotel MGallery by Sofitel, located right smack in the heart of Yogyakarta near the bustling shopping mecca that is Malioboro district.

We were served a welcome drink and local snacks in the elegant lobby lounge while we waited to be checked in.

The  Indochina architecture of this heritage building fuses European Art Nouveau with Javanese and Chinese elements, and potted with traditional wood cravings along all the hallways; creating a gracefully aged and authentic ambience.

Full amenities complete the luxurious experience, including an intimate pool in a courtyard setting, gym and spa, plus a couple of different bars for evening drinks.

The boutique hotel boasts 144 elegant rooms and suites, all decked with a soothing fusion of Asian and European decor accentuated by Indonesia artefacts.

Lunch and dinner are served at the Paprika restaurant, which offers Eastern, Indonesian and Western dishes, accompanied by an daily-changing evening buffet that features a lavish spread, perfect to sample local fare.

Breakfast in the open courtyard is a lovely affair with the cool morning breeze, and similar to the buffet dinner, the variety of food is also mind boggling. I like the organic local coffee.

There’s also a station manned by a couple dressed in handsome Indonesian batik serving traditional Jamu potions that supposedly help to ward off cold and flu symptoms, alleviate indigestion and other ailments  – an acquired taste.

Phoenix Hotel is probably one of the best place to stay if you are visiting Yogyakarta. With its premium location in the heart of town, rich history, impeccable service and old-world charm, what’s there not to like?
