Catalan Delights By Pura Brasa

Pura Brasa is officially my latest fave Spanish restaurant, nestled within the spanking new Tanjong Pagar Centre that is laying claim to the crown of being the tallest building in Singapore.

The contemporary decor of Pura Brasa is smart and colourful, with a blend of comfy booths and high tables for nesting, replete with a faux cow at the entrance as its centrepiece.

This new kid on the Spanish block is a collaboration with Josper, manufacturer of this unique hybrid grill cum oven that cooks food evenly while imparting a smoky aroma to the ingredients; the reason I really love the food here. Pura Brasa is the closest you can get to culinary Barcelona without flying there.

All the items we ordered are delightful—the tender grilled Octopus, soft Eggplant, and fresh tasty Seabass are spot on, imparted with a smokiness that lifts them to a different level.

The seasonal Blue Mussels—ours are from Holland—are the freshest we have tasted in recent memory; absolutely delicious grilled simply with vegetable oil, allowing us to savour the natural juices of the shellfish..

The surprise dish is the Tagliatelle Aglio Olio sautéed with fresh prawns, garlic, chilli pepper and topped with a sunny-side-up egg—a combination so well executed that it puts some Italian restaurants to shame.

The highlight of the evening—and probably the best value item on the menu—has to be the Black Angus Sirloin Entrecot, flavoursome and done a perfect medium rare; unbeatable value at just S$24 for 250g!

We had too many dishes to mention—all are good, a rarity in today’s dining scene where food often takes second place.

What’s a Spanish meal without a Paella?  The Seafood Paella is flavoursome, al dente yet moist; just lacking a crusty socarrat—when I mention it to the manager, he suggests that we request for socarrat when placing the order; will remember to do so on our next trip.

Drinks wise, the Sangria packs a decent punch, while the recommended full-bodied Spanish Comenge Biberius Roble wine pairs well with the robust tapas.

Desserts at Pura Brasa hold their own—the Truffle Chocolate in Puff Pastry is so sinfully seductive that it’s really hard to stop at one. Be warned.

Coupled with a warm, rustic chic ambience; brisk service; and a comprehensive authentic Spanish menu that’s friendly to the wallet, it is hard to resist coming back to Pura Brasa—soon!
